Dieting while on a vacation in France. What a concept. But our two bicycling tour guides were very helpful and aggressive in making sure that the food on my plate was included in the diet. And it was a surprise that the chefs felt challenged to produce an artistic plate. It seemed to me that all the other bike riders in our group were a little jealous when they saw what a beautiful plate came from the kitchen. And tasty.

So you might have deduced that I probably couldn’t ride fast enough to keep up with this (again) younger group. But on the day that we were offered the chance to ride up Mount Ventoux, I took the challenge. This is one of the famous Tour De France mountains that is often the finish of a tour stage. Twenty one kilometers of an up-hill climb that offers no respite. There isn’t a single flat section, even for a few yards. Up to 12% grade all the way.

In this age of transparency and the negative news about sports drugs, I have to admit that I resorted to stimulants. Seven kilometers from the top, there is a restaurant. I stopped and had a Pastis. This aperitif is the best for a bike rider. First, it is the cheapest drink, less than a Coke. And comes with a pitcher of water.

But I was one of five of our group that made it to the top. And we were rewarded with a down-hill run almost all the way back to our hotel, about thirty kilometers. This is the only time that we can ride as fast as the world-class bike riders in the Tour. That is, if you have the nerves to open up on a down-hill.

But my restrictive diet did not limit my physical performance. In fact, I felt better, with no after affects.

A diet of only plant food? Even if motivated, would anyone go on such a restricted diet? Bill Clinton has.

This diet to prevent heart disease and many other diseases is described in Dr. Esselstyn’s book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. His wife has included many recipes in the book.

I have found that there are dozens of delicious recipes made from the plant food list. It takes some effort to find all the ingredients and a real dedication to follow this diet.

I decided that my diet had to change when I heard that a classmate from Yale, Rusty Wailes had died of a heart attack while rowing with a four-man crew on Lake Washington in Seattle. Rusty was on the Yale crew that won the gold medal in the 1956 Olympics. How could such a fit person die of a heart attack? The answer is that fitness doesn’t protect you from a heart attack.

All my male relatives died of heart related problems. Last year I had chest pains while sprinting up a long hill with my bicycle riding companions. This group is ten years younger than I, (I’m 75) so this scared me. One of these “fit” individuals, Johnny Hughes, had chest pains and three months ago had to have a triple by-pass to save his life.

All these factors motivated me to embark on this restrictive diet. It was almost a disaster from the beginning. Just three weeks after I decided to eat differently, Marlene and I went to France for a two-week bicycle ride. (Go to Blog, Diet Wars 3)

Distinguished doctors and scientists have worked for over twenty years to prove that what a person eats can kill him.
They have shown that the secret to avoiding deadly disease is not a single pill or pills, or eating a single item in a diet. Most other studies are done to show that a pill or a specific food will help prevent a particular disease, but these studies are flawed for two reasons. They don’t take all of the factors into account in what a person puts in his mouth. And, even more insidious, all animal based food industries and our government are committed to sell these products. The secret is to avoid ALL animal based products.
Two of the books that show these studies are: Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease and The China Study.

I am recommending that you read these two books, not because I am an animal lover or a vegan fanatic, but because it may save your life. At least help you avoid a long and painful existence before your death.

The cigarette industry went through years of fighting to show that cigarettes were not harmful. We now know that tobacco can cause cancer. But profits from nicotine sales funded a fight against a deadly product.

I am certain that 100 years (maybe more) from now, animal food and refined food products will be viewed in the same light as tobacco is today.

In Fort Worth it will be an uphill battle. We will no longer be called “Cow Town.” Maybe “Tofu Town?” Our annual “Fat Stock Show” is now just “The Stock Show” and in the future will be something like “The Sprouts Show.”

ENGINEER’S GUIDE TO
SHOPPING

Some people go shopping as a form of entertainment or amusement. Haven’t they got something better to do?
When I go shopping I always have in my mind exactly what I want to buy. It is something I need. I in my mind there is the exact product I am looking for. When I see it, I grab it and go.
I am also what some people call cheap. But I like to phrase that as being a ‘minimalist.’ This means that I conserve resources. Even though I can afford to waste water, I take very short showers. This probably only saves a few pennies a year, but it does conserve water. And a cheaper product that does the job is probably exactly what I want, although not always. I am a very smart shopper.
The problem is that these days in stores, especially food markets, there are so many different choices on display, that it is difficult to find the exact product you need.
Let’s say you are at the super market and you have on your list ‘cereal.’ I want a low sugar cereal of maybe granola or raisin bran.
The cereal shelves extend the complete length of the 200 foot long aisle. Where I shop, the price label for each product includes, in smaller numbers, the unit cost. It will indicate that this product costs so many cents per ounce, in the case of cereal.
I have been told by reliable witnesses that what I always suspected is true. The lowest priced product (in the case of grocery store products) is the exact same product but in a different box. As the assembly line progresses in the factory, only the box changes. But many people think that if it is more expensive, it must be better.
A minor problem for me in shopping is that the cheaper products are usually on the bottom shelf, with a price label at floor level, so I have to get down on my knees to read the unit price. Since I am near-sighted and don’t wear bifocals, my face has to be about five inches away to see the price.
With so many choices, I am up and down, up and down. I try to ignore the other shoppers behind me. Last week a white haired woman with a cane glared down at me. Maybe I mistook her look and she only needed someone to pass along the unit prices. I ignored her.
I usually don’t look up at other shoppers from my position kneeling on the floor. They are always smiling with sort of a smirk. I don’t want to give them the pleasure.
Marketers want you to pick out a box of cereal that has some flashy name, something that a kid would choose. You could pay forty-five cents an ounce for something loaded in sugar! This is three times too much! And probably be the worst for your health.
Another example is at the toothpaste stand. Hundreds of choices! I can never remember what kind of toothpaste I like to use! It’s been six months since I last bought some. So it was always a gamble. That is until I found out that what I like (and not only because it is the cheapest) costs only one dollar a tube! The ones that will give you a whiter smile or better smelling breath are four times as much. I am surprised that they don’t promise to make you smarter—for a dollar more. As I was down on my knee at the bottom shelf getting the dollar-a-tube toothpaste, I looked up at the woman with the cane glaring down at me. I flinched and almost put my arm up ready for a blow from the cane. But she was just entertained and finally smiled.
As usual, look on the bottom shelf for the bargain.
How about the toilet paper shelves! Same problem. Two hundred feet of aisle taken up by paper to wipe your butt. Here I am with toilet paper on my list. Up to now, Marlene has always picked out the brand. She included TP on my last shopping list and told me what brand. But I forgot. So I had to take a chance. This is something we couldn’t get by without for a few days.
She said “Be sure to buy such- and-such paper. Don’t buy the cheapest.”
She knows me. I think she likes the soft feel. I never noticed any difference. It’s a macho thing. You have to at least pretend to be tough.
By now you realize that people maybe should call me ‘cheap.’ But I prefer the term ‘minimalist.’ This more accurately describes my shopping choices. Get exactly what you need, no more. That is usually the healthiest, most useful and least expensive. You are getting value for your money.

PAIN
Pain? My wife says I am insensitive. I guess I am not as sensitive as most people. An indication of this is that I am continually doing inadvertent damage to myself: cutting fingers, or bumping into things. But I do heal fast.
Sometimes I am standing on the sidelines as a spectator in freezing weather in my short sleeve shirt. As I concentrate on the players battering each other, someone will say, “Aren’t you cold?”
That’s when I notice that I really am cold. But I have to be told.
The only pain I dread is the dentist’s needle. I always refuse the shot. He shrugs his shoulders and begins drilling my molar for a new filling.
He stops every now and then. “Are you sure it doesn’t hurt?”
“No,” I insist. Even though he hits a nerve occasionally, I resist jumping.
But he drew the line when I told him to go ahead and pull that last wisdom tooth without shots. He insisted to go ahead with his pain killers. The pain of the shots was terrible. 150 years ago, the barber would pull your tooth after giving you a shot of whisky. My dentist refused that too.
It is really all mental. The fear of shots started in the second grade. At the start of the morning class, the teacher announced, “This afternoon, children, you will be getting your shot for diphtheria.”
This was six hours away. A better system would have been for the teacher to say, about a minute before the shot, “Children, stand in line here. You will be getting a cookie.”
She didn’t realize how much the thought would torture us. We looked at each other. The bully in our class said, “It won’t hurt me. I can stand it.”
But through the morning class the teacher went on and on about multiplication tables but we heard nothing. It must have been multiplying the nines. I have always had trouble with the nines. Each of our little minds could only think of that shot we would be getting. It was like trying to prepare ourselves for a firing squad.
We stood in a long line. It was a blessing for those who were at the front of the line. We at the rear of the line agonized over the thought of the shot and the needle. It was going to be a big needle, about like sticking a sharp pencil in your arm.
The bully was just ahead of me. He fainted as soon as he saw the nurse holding the needle. The shot was painful, but short lived. And I didn’t faint.
Years later, I realized that most of the pain was in my head. Piled up over six hours of waiting.
If the teacher had done what I recemmend, as we turned the corner into the nurse station, there would be one nurse with a cookie and another with a needle ready to give you your shot. With no anticipation for this shot, I would not have dreaded getting a shot for the rest of my life. At least I don’t faint. It is in your mind.
Now, when the nurse pulls out a needle for a blood sample or whatever, I tell myself to think of that great chili-cheese hot dog that I get outside Home Depot. The wonderful aroma always seduces me. Besides, Marlene won’t know that I am violating my food code. Or I could think some other pleasant thought.
But I am not going to let the dentist give me a shot for my filling tomorrow. I can stand the drill.

Part I
The day after Barak Obama moved into the White House, he stood with his hands behind his back looking out on the lawn from the Oval Office.
He turned and punched the intercom, “Please hold all calls. I will be in conference.”
He walked around to the front of his mahogany desk and dropped to his knees. With his hands folded he dropped his head. “God, I need your help again.”
In his minds eye, he saw a 12 inch square door in a white wall. A voice from behind the door, “Is dat you Barak?”
“Yes, God.”
The door slid to one side and she stuck her head through the door. Her brown cheeks shining in the celestial glow. ”Damn. You is troublesome. What you want now.”
“Well, God, first I want to thank you for getting me elected to the Presidency of the Greatest Country in the World.”
“You is welcome. I only do few miracles of that scale every year. What else you want? You know that I have many other important people to listen to.”
“Well, God, I need three things in my first four years in office.”
“Yeah?”
“First, I would like to have Universal Health Care for all our citizens.
“Second, a booming economy.
“And third, get rid of Osama BinLaden.”
“Hmm. A lot. Is you sure dat is all you gona’ want?” She said.
“Yes Ma’am, I swear. That is it. No more.”
“You don’t care about getting’ elected after four years?”
“You give me those three and I can take care of the rest.”
Furrows appeared on Her brow. “That last one might have problems.”
“Problems? What problems.”
“You probably don’t know this but Allah has a gated compound, like mine, I mean like ours. He’s down on the next cloud, just past all those inferior gated communities of all those minor and unknown religions. Mine, I mean ours, is the best with the largest gates, just covered with pearls and trimmed with gold. I guarantee you, Boy, you picked the right one.”
Barak nodded. “Yes Ma’am. The best.”
“There is a bunch of Atheists and Agnostics camped out under the wide bridge approaching the entrance to my, I mean our, gate. It warms my heart. They look pretty miserable.
“And just about two clouds down, there’s the abandoned Zeus compound. Grass and weeds growin’ up around those giant wall falling down. He and his bunch just couldn’t compete with us.
“But back to Allah. He and I get along. We don’t really love each other like Jesus shot off his mouth about loving your neighbor bs. Now if I get Osama between the eyes, Allah’s gonna be pissed. You can understand that.”
“Yes Ma’am, God. I can see that would rile him up.”
“Well, he’s got a lot of crazies behind his walls and I don’t need to dis him. He can still control ‘em but the rumor is that he is getting low on virgins.”
“You know I would be eternally grateful if you could grant this wish.”
“Yes you would, boy. Now, before I agree, you will have to help. Understand?”
“What can I do?”
“Send those Special Ops Boys in to get Osama. ”She squinted with one eye closed and stared at Barak Obama.
“Can you do that?”
“You bet, God. And you have my eternal thanks.”

Three years later, Obama is on his knees in front of his desk in the Oval Office. “God, it pains me to have to ask another favor.”
She stuck Her brown face through the window in the white wall. “What you want now. You promised no more favors.”
“I know, Ma’am, but only if all three wishes were granted.”
“Two out of three ain’t bad.”
“I agree. But you need to get me elected this second go-round.”
“With the way the economy is going, its going to take an even bigger miracle this time. It’s still a year to go. A lot can happen. But I can try.”

GUIDE TO PRAYER (PART II)

Governor Rick Perry sat at the dinner table across from Anita. He stuck a fork full of red meat of the famous Nolan Ryan Grass Fed Beef into his mouth.
“Anita,” he paused to chew and moved the steak bite into his cheek so he could talk, “You think this campaign is going to be tough?”
“Yes, Ricky, it will be treacherous. That is why I think you should go directly to God this time.”
“Well, Hon, you may be right. With all this prayer stuff that I have gotten into, that’s a good suggestion. I have always delegated tasks but this is important. I will go directly to Him myself.”
That night, Rick knelt down on his knees next to his bed, folded his hands, and closed his eyes. In his minds eye he could see a 12” X 12” square door in a white wall.
“God, I know you have heard from my many minions in the requests made on my behalf up to now. And you have answered our prayers. But this is important so I am coming direct to you.”
The door slid open and She stuck her head out, her brown cheeks shining in the celestial light.
“Is dat you, Ricky?”
“Oh my God.”
“Yes, I is your God.”
“Oh my God.”
“I said, I is your God. God of all Christendom.”
“Oh my God.” Rick Perry’s eyes and mouth opened wide like he’d seen a ghost.
“Out with it boy. What you want now?”
Rick cleared his throat. “Ah. . . You must know I have declared my candidacy for President of the Most Powerful Country in the World.”
“I heard rumors.”
“Can you make it happen?”
“I do have a conflict of interest. You understand?”
“Now I do understand. Yes.”
“Why would I listen to you above all those other seriously Christian candidates?”
“If you were paying attention, my group of thousands of Christians had a rally in Houston. The prayers were loud and serious.”
“Don’t dis me boy. I hear all the prayers of all the Christians. It is a massive job. So sometimes I don’t get around to some. Like the prayers for rain. They will be answered. You know they will.
“But you do represent a rabid group of voters who care about nothing else but my son, Jesus Christ. That may tip the balance in my eyes.”
“Yes, God. I and Anita have always stated our positions that you know are way to the left in the Christianity field.”
“Well, you just keep that up. I won’t promise anything, but I will watch you in the next year and make my decision just before November.”
“Thank you . . . Ah, Lord . . .Ah God. And we do ask this favor in the name of your son Jesus Christ.”
“Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Keep it up Ricky.”

The next day, Anita asked, “How did it go, Ricky?”
“All fine, woman. Now for dinner tonight I want hog jowls, chitlins, and collard greens. You got dat?”

Texting while driving is another of the long list of driver distractions that are dangerous. Why have a law against texting without covering all the other distracting activities? We should consider a law against Driving While Distracted: DWD. We drivers are all guilty on occasion.

Texting is just more dangerous than most, and it can be proven by the authorities. But an accident caused by fiddling with the radio, putting on lipstick, eating a sandwich, picking your nose, slapping your seven-year old, reading a novel, listening to your mother-in-law, lighting a cigarette, adjusting the air conditioning, etc. are more difficult to prove.

A distraction doesn’t have to be a distraction that takes a driver’s eyes off the road. A driver may be thinking about a problem, or angry over a fight, or just sleepy.

How many accidents are caused by DWD? Even driving with another person in the car has been proven to increase the chance of an accident. In some states, a newly licensed young driver isn’t allowed to drive with a teenage friend passenger for a few months.

During driver training heavy attention should be paid to the problem of DWD, not just texting, but all other activities.

A few years ago I was searching for a firm footing for my religious beliefs.
My 1953 Chevrolet pickup had died on me half way between Big Spring and Abilene, so I was standing in the hot sun beside the road with my thumb out.
A long blue Cadillac convertible eased over to the side of the road and the driver waved at me to get in. Even though it was 110 degrees on the north side of the barn, this fellow had the top down. But that didn’t matter to me. Standing out there burning up made me desperate.
The driver was a real old fellow about forty-five with stringy hair and a high red forehead. He smiled, showing his crooked teeth. I noticed a half empty whiskey bottle rolling around under his feet. I jumped in and he accelerated back on the highway up to about eighty miles an hour. He had his air conditioning running, so it wasn’t quite so hot.
He turned his piercing blue eyes on me and leaned toward me. “Son, you havin’ trouble?”
“Well, yes sir, my pickup quit on me.”
“Son, are you religious?” He was so close to my face that his alcoholic breath scorched my eyes.
He caught me off guard since I hadn’t worked out an answer for the direct question, but I needed to give an immediate answer so he would get his eyes back on the road.
“Uh. Yes, sir. I suppose I am.”
“Do you believe in God-uh?” For a moment his eyes focused on me again and no smile. The way he said “God” was the same way radio evangelists say it with two syllables and the “d” accented. He didn’t wait for my answer.
“Do you believe you are going-uh to Heaven-uh?”
There was that accent on words that evangelists used.
“Do you believe in Jesus-uh Christ?” His voice now in a high pitch.
I needed to answer.
“Uh, yes sir. I guess it all depends.”
He smiled. “Son, you are so right. Now God-uh didn’t deliberately cause your pickup to leave you in the west Texas sun. Think about your past. Have you done something-uh that would displease God-uh.”
My mind raced over the last few days. Let’s see, I tried to grope that girl at the drive-in. I felt guilty after she slapped me, but I wasn’t sorry for trying. I started to answer but he reached over and took my arm in a firm grip and continued.
“Son, you have to get your life together.”
What I had to do was get out of his car. I wasn’t at all comfortable. And he needed to keep his eyes on the road instead of holding that piercing stare on me. I started to feel desperate and needed to do something.
“Sir, would you turn into that service station up ahead. I have a cousin who works there. I can get some help from them.”
He pulled into the station. He put his blue lazers n me and said “Have you listened to me? Are you going to get your life straightened out?”
“Oh, yes sir. Thank you.”
I jumped out, and he roared away with one hand in the air.
I decided then that I needed to have a better answer the next time and figured that a person needs to be able to answer without hesitation: Hesitation shows indecision. I need to say, “I am a Methodist” or something everyone recognizes instead of: “I am an agnostic,” or, God forbid, “I am an atheist.”
The fact that “agnostic” and “atheist” are not even capitalized shows what most people think of those concepts. But either of them is an easy way out, since you can make up your own rules. But still not suitable answers. I have to settle on a religion that people recognize.
But I needed to approach this scientifically. So I made a list of four important considerations and analyzed each one to come to a decision.
Number one consideration was a high level of accepted by my friends. A person needs to be comfortable around his family, friends and acquaintances so the answer to the question “What church do you go to?” needs to keep them from pursuing more questions. Note that the question, especially in Arkansas or Texas, always includes “church” which implies Christianity.
This is important if you want to involve yourself in politics. I believe you would cut the number of votes you would get in half if you said “Buddhist” or “Muslim.” I think even “Mormon” raises eyebrows. So to satisfy consideration number one, it looks like I should pick one of the various Christian religions.
Number two consideration was rules that were easy to learn. It would be best if I didn’t have to learn a whole new set of rules. Since I was raised in a Christian society (Presbyterian, Lutheran or Methodist at one time or another) it would be easiest to just pick one of those. At least I already know a lot of the rules.
One rule in Christianity that all versions espouse is that you should love your neighbor. I like that one and have a little blond neighbor down the street that I plan to start with. Although what I have in mind is crosswise with another of the basic ten rules.
It is also crosswise with the directive to kill all infidels. What if the blond is an infidel? That really complicates things. I will need to ask her if she is an infidel.
Since I know more about Presbyterians, I should choose to be Presbyterian. Although, I never did understand the “predestination” part. If your life is already decided, why try to make corrections or changes? I guess it means that you are one of God’s “Chosen people.”
The third important consideration is how much time that I would need to devote to this religion. If I picked Presbyterian, I would only be expected to attend church once a week for an hour to listen to the preacher tell me what sins to watch out for. That’s good.
The fourth factor is the amount of financial support I would be required to give. This one is easy. A person is not taxed or assessed an amount to stay in the Presbyterian church. Ten percent of your earnings is what the bible suggests. I ‘m sure that the church would be happy with that. But you can give almost nothing and still be considered a Presbyterian. Since I am also a minimalist and presently unemployed, I would be happy with those rules.
Anyone who feels that a large amount of money is the ticket to heaven, they should investigate the numerous TV evangelists who will promise you everlasting life if you give them all your money. In fact some will tell you that having a lot of money is a sin, although it doesn’t seem to worry them.
For now, I will say that I am a Presbyterian. But I need to work more on the many exceptions in my mind.
